Trans Bodies, Trans Selves by Erickson-Schroth Review

- Sailor Jerri

Title and Subtitle: Trans Bodies, Trans Selves: A Resource for the Transgender Community

Author: Laura Erickson-Schroth (Editor)

Publisher: Oxford University Press

Publishing Year & Edition: 1 edition (June 10, 2014)

Intended Audience/Reader Age-Group: All Ages

Description: Transitioning can be a confusing period for a person and those around them. Trans Bodies is an encyclopedia style resource all about transitioning, trans folks, and even accounts of personal transition experiences.
Official Description: “There is no one way to be transgender. Transgender and gender non-conforming people have many different ways of understanding their gender identities. Only recently have sex and gender been thought of as separate concepts, and we have learned that sex (traditionally thought of as physical or biological) is as variable as gender (traditionally thought of as social). While trans people share many common experiences, there is immense diversity within trans communities. There are an estimated 700,000 transgendered individuals in the US and 15 million worldwide. Even still, there's been a notable lack of organized information for this sizable group. Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is a revolutionary resource-a comprehensive, reader-friendly guide for transgender people, with each chapter written by transgender or genderqueer authors. Inspired by Our Bodies, Ourselves, the classic and powerful compendium written for and by women, Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is widely accessible to the transgender population, providing authoritative information in an inclusive and respectful way and representing the collective knowledge base of dozens of influential experts. Each chapter takes the reader through an important transgender issue, such as race, religion, employment, medical and surgical transition, mental health topics, relationships, sexuality, parenthood, arts and culture, and many more. Anonymous quotes and testimonials from transgender people who have been surveyed about their experiences are woven throughout, adding compelling, personal voices to every page. In this unique way, hundreds of viewpoints from throughout the community have united to create this strong and pioneering book. It is a welcoming place for transgender and gender-questioning people, their partners and families, students, professors, guidance counselors, and others to look for up-to-date information on transgender life.” - TransBodies.com

Overview: This resource is a necessity for anyone who is transitioning or has someone they love in their life who is transitioning. It is also a great tool for folks who are just curious about the facts related to Transitioning and are looking for a quality source for facts.

Cunt: A Declaration of Independence by Muscio Review

- Sailor Jerri

Title and Subtitle: Cunt: A Declaration of Independence

Author: Inga Muscio (Author), Ph.D. Betty Dodson (Foreword)

Publisher: Seal Press

Intended Audience/Reader Age-Group: Intended for 18+, but really for anyone who is sexually active

Description: A guide to language and female empowerment. Includes articles on history, etymology, geography, anatomy, pleasure and more!
Official Description: “An ancient title of respect for women, the word “cunt” long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim “cunt” as a positive and powerful force in their lives. In this fully revised edition, she explores, with candidness and humor, such traditional feminist issues as birth control, sexuality, jealousy between women, and prostitution with a fresh attitude for a new generation of women. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin’ Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things cunt-related. This edition is fully revised with updated resources, a new foreword from sexual pioneer Betty Dodson, and a new afterword by the author.” - IngaLagringa.com

Overview: An INCREDIBLE book! A must-have for any feminist men and women alike. “Cunt” is not a dirty word and this book helps to explain that. It is an excellent resource for anyone who is working on body-positivity and self-love. One of my personal favorite books!
